A short history of Wotton-under-Edge

Wotton-under-Edge grew up as a wool and cloth town, and the valleys around it once hummed with mills. The shape of the town still shows it: narrow streets climbing the hillside, stone houses and shops along Long Street and Market Street, and a church and market place at its heart. Katharine Lady Berkeley's School was founded here in 1384, and the town's long list of listed buildings is a reminder of how much of it is old. Isaac Pitman, who devised Pitman shorthand, lived and worked here.

Today it's a lively place for its size: a mix of long-standing local families, people who commute to Bristol and Gloucester, and engineering employment close to the town. The Cotswold Way national trail passes through, and nearby villages such as North Nibley, with its landmark Tyndale Monument, give the area its distinctive skyline.

Practical tips for getting work done in Wotton-under-Edge

Steep streets and tight access are part of life here, so tell tradespeople about parking and delivery constraints up front. If your home is listed or sits within the conservation area, check what permissions you need before changing windows, roofs or external walls. And in the wetter months, don't leave a leak or a failing boiler: local tradespeople get busy fast when the weather turns.
